Joseph Wixson was born in Dutchess New York. His parents were Solomon Wixson and Mary Randall. Joseph's father fought during the Revolutionary War. Joseph had ten brothers and sisters. Joseph and his family immigrated to Canada after the Revolutionary war. The Wixson family settled in Claremont Canada. They cultivated beautiful farms and orchards. The family were some of the Founding Families of the Baptist Church in Claremont.

At the age of 19 Joseph married Deborah Townsend. Deborah's father had also fought during the Revolutionary War. Joseph and Deborah had ten children. All of Joseph's children moved to Michigan with the exception of one son who remained in Canada.
