My dear 3x GGF went out of his way to clear his name in the 19th century; I would like the same chance to clear his name again in the 21st century. Would sincerely appreciate someone correcting the information about him owning a debt, because as you can see from the following book published in 1963 - he did indeed pay (someone else's) debt in full. Sincerely, Dianna S. Radford

Rev. Joshua Wixson (1780-1850)

He was a Baptist minister and the history of his life in Canada is the history of the Baptist Church in the townships of Pickering and Uxbridge; and White Church in the vicinity where he lived.

He along with his family moved from New York state to the province of Ontario, Canada in 1804 and settled on land adjoining that of his brother Joseph, near Claremont in Ontario County. According to a tradition of the family, Joshua Wixson moved to Canada under peculiar circumstances. He aided in the escape (by carrying a passenger in his wagon for several miles) someone who was fleeing the State of New York to avoid payment of a debt. As the story goes, the law at that time was such that a person lending assistance (even though innocent in so doing), which enabled the said person to escape from his debts; would become responsible for the other person's debts. It than became necessary for Joshua WIxson to flee, as he had not the means to take care of the obligations placed upon him by what he supposed was an act of kindness. Many years afterward he returned from Canada with small sacks of gold coin secreted about different parts of his clothing, paid the debts and thereby cleared his name and his conscience. He then settled on a farm near Lexington, Michigan in Sanilac County where he spent the remainder of his life.

Rev. Joshua E. Wixon was born in Dutchess County New York. His parents were Solomon Wixon and Mary Randall. He married Rachel Eggelston Oct. 14, 1798. He was a Baptist Minister. Joshua and Rachel moved to Pickering Ontario Canada and lived there for many years. It has been said in family stories that Joshua helped a friend leave New York by hiding his friend in his wagon. His friend owed a debt. At that time if you were caught helping someone with a debt escape you yourself were responsible for the debt. Joshua was caught and did not have the money to pay his friend's debt. He moved to Canada to escape the debt.
