ROUNDUP – John Barthule, Sr., 78, of Roundup, died at his home on Dec. 11, 2001, after a long-term illness. He was born at Newton's Grove, Mont., on April 29, 1923, to Jacob and Helena Barthule, who homesteaded there after immigrating from Russia.
John grew up in mostly in Townsend, one of 11 children, and joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. at 15. He entered the U.S. Army air corps in 1940, serving in the Pacific during WWII as an aircraft maintenance technician through the New Guinea Campaign, and reached the level of staff sergeant. He received his honorable discharge in 1945.
In 1957, John joined the Helena Police Force after working as a carpenter for years.He remained with the Helena police until 1962, when he graduated with a law enforcement degree from Montana State College in Bozeman.He then joined the Montana Fish and Game Dept., serving as a warden in Great Falls, Anaconda and Roundup until his retirement in 1982.After retirement, he continued to work for the Dept. at check stations and as caretaker at Deadman's Basin.He enjoyed hunting, fishing and carpentry, and was also an accomplished guitar player.John constructed and flew model airplanes, and was a licensed pilot with over 5,000 hours of flying time.He loved to fly.
John was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Kay Hanley in 1985; and his wife, Dorothy, in 1988.He is survived by two sons and their families, Jacob E. and Vicki Barthule, Roundup; John D. and Bron Barthule, Rapid City, S.D.; and two daughters and their families, Cheryl R. and Ron George, Walla Walla, Wash.; Lynn M. and Clarence Phipps, Reedpoint.He is also survived by his sister, Kate Duede, Townsend; brother George Barthule, Early Branch, S.C.; and youngest brother, Robert Barthule, who was his constant companion over the last year and was with him when he died.
