Evelyn W Bechtel (87) died in the LuAnn Nursing Home on Friday, February 6. Evelyn was
formerly a resident of Wakarusa, In. she lived at 209 N Spring St.
Evelyn was born on September 25, 1910, in Nappanee, to Franklin Wehrly and Iva (Phend) Wehrly.
She married Robert O Bechtel on October 20, in Wakarusa United Methodist Church parsonage. Robert proceeded her in death on March 16, 1962.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs Stanley (Margaret “Peggy”) Scherer of Wakarusa, and Mrs David (Jane) Mattingly of Wakarusa, and eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Mrs Bechtel worked at the Exchange State Bank and operated Leisure Craft Ceramic Studio in her home from the 1960’s until the 1980’s.
She was the church organist for over 75 years for the First Presbyterian Church in Nappanee
where she was a member.
Mrs Bechtel was a 1927 graduate of Nappanee High School, was instrumental in founding the Indiana Lakeland Girl Scout Troop 48 of Wakarusa, a member of the Eastern Star chapter 367. The Sigma Eta Fine Arts Sorority Inc, served as a 4-H leader for a number of years and was a member of the Hoosier Recreation Workshop of Purdue, and served as the first secretary to the Wakarusa Historical Society.
Visitation was on Sunday, February 8, 1998 at the Rieth- Rohrer- Ehret-Lienhart funeral home in Wakarusa here the funeral was also held on Monday, at 11 am The Rev Terry Tyler of First Presbyterian Church of Nappanee presided. The burial was at Olive (east) Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to Girl Scout Troop 48 of Wakarusa.
