Leo James Hoerner, 97, of Ipswich, died June 29, 1997 after a long illness at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Ipswich.

He was born on March 27, 1900 to Balthaser and Elizabeth (Kiest) Hoerner at Bowdle. He attended school there. He farmed with his brothers until 1929, when he was elected as the Edmunds County Register of Deeds. He served four years.

He married Florence Kasel on July 19, 1932 at Marion, S.D., where his brother, Father Henry Hoerner was the pastor at that church. They have lived in Ipswich since that time. Leo started in the insurance business and had his own agency until he retired. He sold the agency to Dave Nelson in 1977.

He had served on the Ipswich City Council. He had been president of the Better Businessman Club of Ipswich. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the North American Life and Casualty Board. He had been a member of the Knights of Columbus of the Aberdeen Council. He was a member of the Holy Cross Church.

He is survived by his wife, Florence; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Martin (Ann) Abler of Hoven.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Charlotte, in 1990; and seven brothers and four sisters.
