Joseph Hoerner was the son of Balthaser and Elizabeth (Kiest) Hoerner. Brother of 12 siblings: 7 brothers and 5 sisters.

He died of pneumonia at the age of 16, while putting out a school fire.

He was buried alongside his parents and his brother, Peter, at St. Augustine Cemetery in Bowdle, South Dakota.
