IN MEMORIUM - Abraham Witherup
On the 4th day of April 1875, at his home in Clinton Township, died Abraham Witherup aged 66 years, 2 months and 17 days. One of the oldest citizens of this county. Born in Harrisburg in 1787 and came with his parents to Venango County in 1800 where he resided up to the time of his death. Of a family of 13 children born, all except two survive him. Some of them now old men and women.
John Witherup, Abraham's father, was the first Sheriff of Venango County, elected in 1805. Deceased filled many offices of public trust creditably to himself and acceptabilty to the people. Commanded a volunteer company in the War of 1812 and was detailed to serve several days with his company as a marine guard on board one of the ships of Commodore Perry's squadron*. Esteemed by all who knew him. Social qualifications were remarkable and his society was sought for by all who appreciate genial presence of a ripe and cultured old age. In all his intercourse with his fellow man he was a model of courtesy and kindness. Died in full assurance of a blessed immortality.

*After the war, Cpt. Witherup received a special commendation from Admiral Perry who invited Capt. Witherup and his men to dine with him - an unusual and unexpected honor.
