Helen was born Feb. 26, 1917, in Hartford. She was the youngest of 13 children born to Frank Shafer and Lenora Cook. Helen married Virgil F. Dunning on Jan. 8, 1943, and together had two daughters. She was "93 years young" and still enjoyed life and adventure. She enjoyed outdoor activities including going on scenic car rides, cardinals, and particularly bonfires and barbecues, which included having her family nearby.
She will be remembered for humor and "always had something to say to make you laugh." She enjoyed watching classic television programs, doing word search puzzles, golf and bowling. Helen was "a giver" who was willing to help those in need.
She never forgot dates of interest or anyone's birthday. Most of all, Helen cherished time spent with her family – especially her grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and greatgreat-grandchildren.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Gloria (Pat) Yore of Watervliet; grandchildren, Scott (Sandra) Yore and Kimberly (Tim) Bartee; great-grandchildren – Scott, Sean, Dustin, Jonathon, Timothy, Madison and Sydney; two greatgreat-grandchildren, Kaylee and Kayden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil, in 1997; a daughter, Maureen Kaye Dunning in 2001; 12 brothers and sisters; and a grandson, Shawn Allen Yore.
