Gottlieb was born at #9 Meerbeck, in Schaumburg district of Lower Saxony, the 7th of 11 children born to Fred and Sophie Bartels. When he was a year old the family made the decision to go to America, where there was more land and more opportunities. They set sail from Bremen on 30 Mar 1869 aboard the SS Hermann, in steerage and the family had one deck room also. After a month, on May 3, 1869 they arrived in their new homeland at the port of New York. They then traveled by train to Beecher City, Illinois where there was a large group of German immigrants including many with whom they shared kinship. The family became naturalized American citizens. After about ten years in Illinois, the family decided, at the urging of fellow kinsmen, to move again to where there was plenty of inexpensive land: to Saline County, Nebraska. It was here that the Bartels took firm hold, and Fred's descendants thickly populate the region.
On 8 Feb 1894 Gottlieb was united in marriage to fellow immigrant Bertha Lau of Saline County, at the Zion Lutheran Church which stood beside this cemetery. They were the parents of eight children:
Clara Sophia (1895-1982), married Martin Ernest Friedrich Brueggemann);
Martha Anna Lena (1897-1967), married first Herman Peter Weishahn) and second Erich Carl Ahrens;
Lydia (1900-1923), married Carl Schwisow;
Edna (1903-1992), married Henry Endorf;
Arthur Daniel (1905-1967), married Alma Dorothy Harmsen;
John F (1909-1999), married Esther Rohr;
Florence M (1914-2006), married Edgar B Biffle; and
Arnold F (1918-2004).

Gottlieb was suffering from gallstones and underwent an unsuccessful surgery in York but died a few days later.
