Anna was the last of the 11 children born to Fred and Sophie Bartels. They had emigrated from Germany 8 years before Anna as born. She was baptized 9 Dec 1877 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Will County, Illinois. The following year, her parents moved their family to Saline County, Nebraska; Anna was confirmed in 1891 at the Zion Lutheran Church, which her father had helped found. At Zion, Anna married August Schweer on 6 Jan 1898 and they were the parents of six children. The firstborn, Theodor, lived only about a year. Likewise, the lastborn, Arnold, died before the age of 2. The children who grew to adulthood were Agnes, Arthur, Alfred and Irene (who may have initially been named Arene).
August died from gallstones on 30 Sep 1915, leaving Anna with four children to raise. In Jan 1920 she sold the Schweer family farm and moved to Seward, Nebraska. Oldest daughter, Agnes, was married in her mother's house in 1919 and moved to Ritzville, Washington around 1925. In 1925, Anna sold her home in Seward and briefly moved to Omaha, Nebraska but soon repurchased land in Seward and moved back there. Only 2 years later, on 2 Nov 1927, she and daughter Irene moved to Ritzville where daughter Agnes lived. Suffering from chronic heart problems and asthma, Anna lived with daughter Agnes until she died. (According to her will, she left nothing to her sons Alfred and Arthur because she had so little. She gave her linens and personal belongings to be split between her daughters Agnes and Irene. The remainder was given to daughter Agnes on the condition that Agnes take care of her for the rest of her life.) On 30 Apr 1944 Anna died of a coronary thrombosis at her home on Palouse and was buried 4 days later in the graveyard at Emanuel Lutheran Church.
