Harlan E. Hall, 89, passed away at his home on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 surrounded by his family.
Harlan was born August 7, 1921 near Vashti, ND to Roy Leavitt and Emma Norby Hall. At the age of twenty, Harlan was drafted into the United States Army. He served as a sergeant at Fort Douglas. He then went over seas with the 87th Anti-Aircraft Battalion.
During his time in the military he travelled around the globe to such places as Perth, Australia; Bombay, India; the Himalayas; Dakar, Africa and Natal, Brazil. After his time in the service, he served as a bus driver for the Granite School District for twenty-two years.
Harlan was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where, throughout his life he held many callings and enjoyed his time serving in the temple. In 2001, Harlan surprised his family when he received his high school diploma from Southpointe High School.
On October 6, 1945, Harlan married Doris (Dot) Keate. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised nine children. After Doris' passing in 1993, Harlan met and married Ruth Pace Greening in the Jordan River Temple on March 8, 1996.
Harlan and Ruth enjoyed travelling around the country with family or by themselves. Together they served one year in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana Mission where they were loved by all those who came into contact with them. Even through years of failing health, Grandpa's cheerful personality and loving demeanor never waivered.
Harlan is survived by his loving wife Ruth, children- Nancy Shunk, Michael (Jerry) Hall, Patti (Kent) Nelson, Pamela (Timmy) Shunk, Danny (Debbie) Hall, Jeffery Hall, Tammy (Rick) Brown, Cindy (Dave) Phillips, Paula (Bob) Durrant, Jerry Greening, Janet (Wes) Duvall, Jody (Jim) Taufer, and RuthAnn Greening. Harlan is also survived by sisters Hazel, Marian, Norma, Rhoda, and brother Gene. He leaves behind grandkids, great-grandkids, and great-great-grandkids totaling more than 120. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Doris, daughter Judy, grandson Joey Williams, granddaughter Tiffany Flitton, brothers William and Roy Jr., and many others who waited to greet him in heaven.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 2, 2011 in the American Fork Twenty-Seventh Ward Building, 165 North 350 West, American Fork. There will be a viewing held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday evening and also from 10:00-10:45 a.m. before the services.
