Fred Rostrom was born and raised around Kinder. His father, who had moved here from Kansas, homesteaded some land north of Kinder, and that's where Fred grew up. He told us that he would walk the railroad tracks to school in his young years. He was raised on a rice farm, and was a rice farmer all his life.
He married Barbara (after 4 years of courtship) in 1940, and became a wonderful stepfather to her 4 children, Winifred, Relia, Ethel, and Margie. He was a rice farmer all his life, growing up on his father's farm, north of Kinder. He had a strong will, and disciplined himself accordingly. He treated his fellow man with dignity and decency, and expected the same from them.
He and Barbara bought land from the Johnsons, north of his old home place, about 4 miles north of Kinder, and started farming for themselves. Fred loved the land, loved his old blue jeans, his machinery, and most of all, he loved his wife "Barbie".
On July 25th, 1981, while repairing a truck, near the rice bins; wearing his old blue jeans, he dropped dead of a heart attack on the land he loved. His family felt sure that was the way he would have wanted to go. He was grieviously mourned by his whole family. He had become a beloved "father" and " grandfather" to a very large family.
