Paul Heinrich August was the 6th of 13 children born to Henry and Mary (Haake) Bartels on their farm in Saline county south of Tobias (a little northeast of Zion church). He was baptized there as an infant and confirmed in 1912. He attended Zion Lutheran School next to the church through the 8th grade.
On March 16, 1926 he married Renata Reetz and they farmed in Saline County south of Tobias. They had three children: LaVona, ElRoy, and Laird.
At the time of his death, he was living with daughter LaVona. She reported that he had wandered off and he was found five hours later, but had died from natural causes with the heat a contributing factor.
Pre-deceasing him was a grandson, Lloyd Willis Niederklein. Surviving him were his wife, three children, and 12 grandchildren.
