Emil was the 7th of the 13 children born to Henry and Mary (Haake) Bartels. He was brought up in the Zion Lutheran Church south of Tobias, being baptized there as an infant and confirming his faith in 1914.

He was married to Hannah Schafer on December 24, 1924, also at Zion Lutheran Church.

He farmed in the Olive Precinct of Saline County, near the church. He was the father of three children: Junior, Priscilla, and Eugene.

At death he was survived by his wife, his children, and 16 grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Terry.

His death was announced in the 20 Mar 1976 edition of the "Beatrice (Nebraska) Daily Sun", page 3:

TOBIAS--Emil Bartels, 75, Tobias, died Friday, March 19 in Tobias. Born, April 11, 1900, rural Tobias. Survivors: wife, Hannah; sons, Junior and Eugene, both of Tobias; daughter, Mrs. Priscilla Jordan of Tomball, Texas.
