John was the 6th of 8 children born to Gottlieb and Bertha (Lau) Bartels, both German immmigrants who were some of the earliest settlers in Saline County, Nebraska; John's grandfather Fred Bartels was one of the charter members of Zion Lutheran Church.

John was baptized at Zion (1909) and confirmed there in 1923. He married Helen Jordening at Zion in August,1930. They had four children. The first, a son, was stillborn. Then came Wayne John, Carol Ruth, and Jean. John farmed in Saline County, just like all his ancestors had.

His wife Helen died in 1968. The following year he married Esther Rohr Bartels, the widow of his cousin (first cousin, once removed) Lorenz Bartels, and became step-father to her two daughters Phyllis Jean and Sharon.
