DECATUR - George Russell "Russ" Havener

78, of Decatur died 7:10 a.m. Tuesday (May 8, 2001) in Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Brintlinger and Earl Funeral Homes with visitation 5 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 p.m. Masonic rites. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery with military rites by the Macon County Honor Guard. Memorials: Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Russ was born Jan. 11, 1923, in Owaneco, the son of George and Bertha Cameron Havener. He worked for Western Electric for 35 years, retiring in 1976. He was a World War II veteran, serving in France and Germany and received the Meritorious Service Award. He was past president of the Ski Klub of Illinois, Decatur Shrine Club and Oriental Band; past ambassador to Coles, Shelby and Edgar County for the Shrine and was appointed as honorary outer guard for 2000, which brought great pride to him. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory in Springfield, Ansar Shrine of Springfield, Hillbilly Clan, American Legion Post 105, Telephone Pioneers of America and Great Light Lodge. Russ dedicated his life to helping others by spending immeasurable hours working with the Shriners to help crippled children. He was a supporter of the International Order of Jobs Daughters for many years. He married Iris M. Anderson on January 3, 1943, in St. Charles, Mo.

Russ was a loving husband for 58 1/2 years and a loving father and grandfather. He will be loved and missed by all who knew him. The family wishes to thank Dr. Neviackas and the staff of Mid-West Kidney Dialysis Center for their love and care.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, David; sisters, Inez Moore, Irene Adams and one infant sister; and brothers, Asa, Clifford, Homer, Otis (Chief), Harlan and Tom.
