Shirley J. Stone 1917 - 2009 BENNINGTON Shirley J. Stone, 91, a longtime resident of Manchester passed away peacefully Saturday evening, Feb. 28, 2009, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington where she has resided since 1994. Shirley was born in Manchester on Oct. 2, 1917, the daughter of Dwight T. and Mary Tifft Jones and attended school in Manchester. She married Vearn Henry Stone, Sr. on Jan. 19, 1938. Mr. Stone, a World War I veteran, died June 22, 1955. They had one son, Vearn Henry Stone, Jr. who served in the Vietnam War for two enlistments. She and her husband enjoyed going to auctions and purchased many antique pieces of furniture. She worked at the former Palace Hotel and area cinemas. Mrs. Stone enjoyed visiting relatives and keeping in touch. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary date. At the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation, bingo was her favorite game until her eyesight and hearing failed. She liked to walk in the sunshine whenever someone was available to help her. Shirley leaves her son, Vearn Henry Stone, Jr., his wife Cindy, a step-son and their two children, Sheena and Vearn Henry, III, all of Maine, and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a half-sister Sarah Wolcott; by a half-brother, William Tifft; by two sisters, Bessie Pease and Ruby Frost, and by three brothers, Harmon, DeForest and Albert Jones. FUNERAL NOTICE: At the request of the family, funeral services will be private. There will be no visiting hours. If friends desire, gifts in Shirley's memory may be made to the Manchester Rescue Squad, c/o of HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME, Arlington Chapel, P.O. Box 528 Arlington, VT 05250.
