Born to Christian and Christina Groth. At the age of 15, he came to America from His home in Kamin, Germany (a village in N Prussia near the Baltic Sea) to Hamburg where he boarded the Barque Franklin which landed in New York on Sept 26, 1842. From there with four of his six siblings (3 brothers and his married pregnant sister, Christine and her husband and their 2 children made their way to Milwaukee, then Cedarburg, WI where they began building their lives. His parents and other 2 brothers, came later in 1843; the two brothers being detained by duty in the services.
