Ludwig Groth was born to Christian and Eleanor Christina(e) Groth.
In 1842 at the age of 29, he traveled to America from his homeland of Kamin, Germany (a village in North Prussia near the Baltic Sea) to Hamburg where he and 4 of his siblings boarded the Barque Franklin, and landed in New York on September 26, 1842 according to ship's manifest. They then made their way to Milwaukee picking up provisions before heading to the wilds of Cedarburg. Land records show he purchased his first property in Oct. of 1842, and he and his brothers no doubt set about quickly building shelter before winter set in in Wisconsin. A map of his land purchases show that he owned a good portion of what is now downtown Cedarburg, WI. He and his brother-in-law, F. Dobberpuhl (his wife's brother) both donated an acre of land for the initial log cabin structure of Trinity Lutheran Church including the first cemetery (which is now called Founders Cemetery). His married pregnant sister, Christine and her husband, John Suelflow, and their two children were also in their familial party but sometime during the journey Christine delivered their third child and both died and were buried at sea. Ludwig's parents and other two brothers (Johann and Martin) came in August, 1843.

Ludwig married Carolina(e) (nee Dobberpuhl), who after he died an early death at age 37 in 1850, married Johann Kressin in 1851.
Ludwig & Caroline had five children:
Franz L. who married Johanna nee Radue
Bertha who married August Ziemer
Carl who married Marie nee Spuhl
Rosaline who married Albert Laabs
Dorothea Wilhelmine Auguste-died at age 4

Ludwig's six siblings are:

Johann (John)who married Wilhelmine nee Jaeger
Friederich who married Dorothea nee Sueflow
Martin who married Dorothea nee Hackbarth
Ferdinand who had three marriages (See his record)
