Born to Christian and Christina Groth. At the age of 18, he left his home in Kamin, Germany (a village in N Prussia near the Baltic Sea) and along with four of his six siblings made their way to Hamburg and boarded the Barque Franklin ship and landed in New York on Sept. 26, 1842. Then made their way to Milwaukee, WI no doubt picked up provisions before heading to Cedarburg to begin their life there. His parents and other 2 brothers, joined them in 1843, their ship landing in New York in August of 1843. The brothers were all farmers and purchased land in and around the Cedarburg, WI area - they settled the wilds of the land with hard work guided with their Lutheran faith.

Ferdinand had 3 marriages 1)(Wilhelmine nee Dobberpuhl);2)(Karoline nee Habakuk)3) Christiana (nee Naulin). First marriage-2 daughters: Wilhelmine m John Erdmann; Martha m William Erdmann (possibly 9 more children-died in childbirth w/last child); Second marriage (also died shortly after childbirth of only son-John m Mathilda (nee Eickstedt); Third marriage-7 children-4 sons/3 daughters: Ernest; Herman m Amelia (nee Maas);Anna m August Heuer; Friedericka m William Kurtz; Ferdinand m Helena (nee Groth - his nephew Franz's daughter); Bernhard m Josephine(wife 1)& Maggie(wife 2); and Ida m William Hoppe. Records show that in 1900 15 members of this family died - disease not known as of this writing.

Ferdinand's 6 siblings are: 1)Ludwig m Carolina(e)(nee Dobberpuhl)(after Ludwig died at age 37 she married Johann Kressin); 2)Christine m John Suelflow (Christine died during their voyage to America along with their newborn baby); 3)Johann 'John' m Wilhelmine (nee Jaeger); 4)Friedrich m Dorothea (nee Suelflow); 5)Martin m Dorothea (nee Hackbarth); 6)Wilhelm m Friederike (nee Jahn).
