John Kamla came to America from Lichtental, Akkerman, Bessarabia, Russia--now part of Moldova and Ukraine--with his parents when he was one year old. They made their home in Lincoln, NE, and in 1893 moved to this territory. They settled on a homestead about six miles south of Haigler, NE, in Cheyenne County, Kansas, joining others who had immigrated from Russia.
John married Bertha December 4, 1910, at Benkelman, NE. He and Bertha raised daughter Berdean as their own child--her mother Elizabeth (Harsch) Samler, wife of John's cousin John Samler, died when Berdean was two months old--and helped raise Beth and Henry, a niece and nephew of Bertha's.
