Because of farming hardships in North Dakota, Gordon moved with his parents and siblings in 1936 to Albany, Linn Co., Oregon. Soon after his arrival, he enlisted in the Oregon National Guard, serving along with two of his brothers (Willard and Noel) in the 249th Coast Artillery Regiment.
Gordon's service in the National Guard was only the beginning of a long and distinguished military career. On the 15 December 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Stevens, seeking officer training. During World War II he served as a First Lieutenant in the Regimental Headquarters Company, 413th Infantry Regiment, 104th Division ("Timberwolves").
On the 4 March 1944, before shipping out with his other fellow Timberwolves for service in Northern France, Gordon married Marjorie Joan Stellberg, the daughter of Johann Emanuel Stellberg (1893-1931) and Olive Belle Welshons (1895-1978), whom he had met while receiving training in Wisconsin. They had one son named Jon who also had a career in the US Army.
Soon after their marriage, Gordon shipped out and arrived in France, where, among other places, he served during World War II. As a result of his distinguished service during the war, Gordon received the Silver Star. After the war, Gordon's service in the Army continued on through the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired at the rank of Colonel, returning with his family to Albany, Linn Co., Oregon where he passed away of cancer.
