HEADSTONE says born 1872; obituary says 1882; census for 1900 says born Aug 1873. Obituary says age 55 = born 1872.

OBITUARY Iron River Reporter April 26 1927 “Jess Allen, 55, Is Taken Sunday”
Jess Allen, age 55, a resident of Iron River for 45 years, died at St. Mary’s hospital, Milwaukee, at 6 o’clock Sunday evening following an operation for rupture performed on April 8.
A stone mason by trade, Mr. Allen served Iron River officially as township clerk, township treasurer, and for several years as chief of police. He arrived in Iron River with his parents with the earliest settlers and made his home here continuously. He was born at Ft. Atkinson, Wis. in 1882 [1872].
The body will be brought to Iron River today for burial in the Iron River cemetery. Services will be held from the Johns’ undertaking parlors tomorrow afternoon, with the Rev. Milo Filipi in charge.
Besides a wife, seven children survive. They are: John, now with the U. S. army in Panama, Emery, Merle and Elwin of Iron River, Myron of Republic, and the Misses Mercedes of Chicago and Jean of Republic.

John F. Allen, a Civil War veteran and an early Iron River settler, married Eliza Wall. Records indicate that John and Eliza, sons Frank, John, Jesse and daughter Minnie came to Iron River in 1882 from Menominee, Michigan.
The Allen men were primarily stone masons. Many of the original homes in the Iron River area bear witness to their trade, i.e. plastered walls, chimneys, foundations, etc.
In 1900, Frank Allen purchased 40 acres of land in Iron River which he had platted and registered as Allen's Addition in 1913. This portion of the Allen Farm became the Virgil Location. Prior to the death of Frank Allen in 1926, he willed 3 acres of the Allen Farm to the John Burt Allen family. The remaining acreage, willed to Emery J. Allen, a grandson of John F. Allen and son of Jesse E. Allen, was sold by Emery J. Allen to the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company in 1956.
Merle D. Allen and Myron M. Allen, grandsons of John F. Allen and sons of Jesse E. Allen, presently reside in the Iron River Stambaugh area.

1900 US CENSUS for Iron River Michigan shows Jesse E. Allen head age 27 born Aug 1873 Wisconsin married 0 years since 1900. Jessie A. wife age 25 born Nov 1875 Wisconsin married 0 years since 1900 0 children.

INFORMATION FROM RELATIVE grandson George Ransom ([email protected]) says his mother was Jean C. Allen Ransom born in 1915. There was also another sister Mercedes Allen Stegeman who passed away in 1956 in Milwaukee. A brother Elwyn died in 1949 in an auto wreck while stationed at Ft. Sill OK.
