John F. Allen, a Civil War veteran and an early Iron River settler, married Eliza Wall following his discharge from Co. "L," 3rd Regiment, Wisconsin Cavalry on October 23, 1865. Records indicate that John and Eliza, sons Frank, John, Jesse and daughter Minnie came to Iron River in 1882 from Menominee, Michigan. John F. Allen died in Iron River in 1908.
The Allen men were primarily stone masons. Many of the original homes in the Iron River area bear witness to their trade, i.e. plastered walls, chimneys, foundations, etc.
In 1900, Frank Allen purchased 40 acres of land in Iron River which he had platted and registered as Allen's Addition in 1913. This portion of the Allen Farm became the Virgil Location. Allen Street, in the Virgil, was in all probability named in honor of Frank Allen.
Prior to the death of Frank Allen in 1926, he willed 3 acres of the Allen Farm to the John Burt Allen family. This acreage is still owned by Mrs. Dorothy Allen Staffeldt, an heir of the John Burt Allen family. The remaining acreage, willed to Emery J. Allen, a grandson of John F. Allen and son of Jesse E. Allen, was sold by Emery J. Allen to the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company in 1956.
Merle D. Allen and Myron M. Allen, grandsons of John F. Allen and sons of Jesse E. Allen, presently reside in the Iron River Stambaugh area.

Married Eliza Wall Oct 2 1855 in Williamstown, New York. 1856 couple homesteaded to Fort Atkinson WI with Eliza's parents. Enlisted Mar 20 1864, having a wife & 4 young children. Discharged Oct 23 1865 from Fort Levenworth KS. 1870 census says brickman age 36 wife + 4 children. 1880 census in Menominee, Michigan. Probably 1882 he came to Iron River. He & sons were stonemasons. He built the Presbyterian church chimney with son Jesse in 1884. 1904 granted pension. 4 children included sons Jesse and Frank.

At the left is Steve Major of the West Side Veterans Council. John Frank Allen, who was born in 1835 and died in 1908, enlisted in the Third Regiment of the Wisconsin Cavalry in 1864 and served through the end of the war. He moved to Iron River in the 1880s, working as a stone mason. Buried next to his wife, Eliza (the marker on the left), his grave had not been marked until now, after the U.S. government donated a special Civil War headstone. Allen's grandson was Myron "Bud" Allen, who was married to Genevieve Allen for many years.
RUM REBELLION REVUE INFORMATION from 2012 says in 1900 John Allen spent $400 to purchase 40 acres of land north of Iron River toward the mining locations that became Mineral Hills. In 1913, 10 of the acres were platted as the Virgil Location. There were three streets in the plat-Allen Street, named for the developer and which became the center of the location, Virgil Street named for the location and which had some houses on it, and McDonald, which was never developed.
