Mary Jane was the daughter of Charles and Mary Brown Worick. She spent her youth in Stephenson County IL. On 16 Sept 1867, she married Civil War veteran John Philip Garman. They had three children, William, Laura, and George. They were later divorced.

By 1881, she had married William H.H. Mercer, another Civil War veteran and was living in the Painted Woods area of Dakota Territory. They had two children, William and Mary Jane. She was widowed in 1901.

She was married briefly to Niles Sanderson before being widowed again.

Her last years were spent in the Sioux City IA area near her daughter Laura. She lived to the age of 69.
