Philip, as he was known, was the son of William and Catherine Roland Garman. He came to IL with his family at the age of ten, walking beside a covered wagon.

He served in the Union Army during the Civil War with the IL 93rd Infantry. He was wounded twice. He lost the small finger of his right hand and was shot in the thigh, causing a limp for the rest of his life.

On 15 Sept 1867, he married Mary Jane Worick. They had three children, William, Laura, and George. They later divorced and he married Mary Schuman.

Philip became a minister and served churches in Pierre, Rosebud, and Dallas, South Dakota.

He spent his remaining years in Cedarville IL until his death at 85 years.
