William Mercer, son of William H.H. and Mary Jane Worick Mercer, lived his youth in the Painted Woods area of Burleigh County ND.

He taught school while attending Agriculture School in ND. On 7 June 1911, he married Edna Abel. They soon moved to Montrose County CO, where he began his career as a weed expert for the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver.

He and his wife retired and moved to Lakeport CA around l954.

William drowned when he was swept off a rocky ledge where he was fishing in the Pacific Ocean. He was 82 years old.
