James came to Illinois as a small boy, orphaned or perhaps fatherless. He was living with George and Caroline Green, possibly his grandparents, at the time of the 1850 census. Adult James was very tall and slender.

He enlisted in Union Army serving with Co H, 136th IL Infantry from 31 May 1864, when he enlisted at Centrailia, IL, to Sep.1864. His great-grandson still owns the trunk which carried his belongings during his military service.

He married Celia Ann Shupe on Aug 26, 1868 in Albion, IL. William Schofield officiated at the ceremony. They had 10 children and farmed around Golden Gate in Wayne Co. IL.

Very little is known about James before his marriage to Celia Shupe. At one time he operated a ferry across the Little Wabash River near Golden Gate, in Wayne Co. IL.

Leta Snelling McKibben said (1972) that she believes he was the son of William Snelling, Sr. born in England and of Mary Ann Green Snelling. [a Mary Ann Snelling married 1 Mar 1874 John Holt in Edwards Co. IL.]

Leta said in her letter:
"Grandpa (William Sr.) and his brother were orphans who came over from England. His brother (unnamed) moved to the West where Ft. Snelling was located."
