Owen Betterton was the son of Joshua and Mary West Betterton. He was one of thirteen of their children.

Owen Betterton married Nancy "Ann" Moon, daughter of John and Elizabeth Mount Moon on December 14, 1833 in Martinsville, Ohio.

In 1850, Owen and Ann with eight children migrated to Illinois and secured government land in Chestnut township. There they established a home and cultivated their fields. Owen Betterman became a prominent man in the area and for many years served as a Justice of the Peace.

Owen was a member of the Masonic fraternity and both Owen and Ann were active members of the Christian Church.

Owen and Ann had ten known children. Their children were:

Elizabeth (1835-1917) married Henry Davis
Mary Jane (1936-1905)
John (1840-1922) married Amelia Ellen Barnard
Cyrus (1842-1907) married Amanda Cowman
George L. (or R.?) (1843-1912) married Rebecca Ann Morris
Joshua (1846-1918) married Liza Pickeral
Susan (1848-1875) married Benjamin Coffman
Sarah Ellen (1851-1929) married Pleasant Grice
Laura Marie (1855-1942) married Henry Clay Jones
Emma Arnetta (1858-1937) married Edward G. White

At least one reliable family tree indicates another daughter Bernice, born in 1834, who married a Mr. Brown but no evidence has thus far been found to document her place in this family.

John, George and Joshua were members of the Company D, Seventh Illinois Volunteer Calvary in the Civil War.

The above biography is from "Our Ancestors, Havlik, LaHue, Ryman, Wisdom" by Laurence L. Wisdom now under the stewardship of Jan Lange and with thanks to Thomas J. Bittman and his excellent "The Family History of Henry Davis and Elizabeth Betterton of Knox County, Illinois".
