Mrs. James Root, one of the last survivors of the pioneer settlers of Waseca county, died at three o'clock last Friday morning at the residence of her son, J.S. Root of Waldorf, with whom she has been making her home. She suffered a paralytic stroke the previous Tuesday and was unconscious from that time until the angel of death called her.
Hannah Brisbane was born in Delaware County, New York, on Aug. 18, 1840, and attained the age of 78 years, two months and six days. She was the daughter of Hon. William Brisbane, who took a prominent part in the early affairs of this county. The family came to this county in the spring of 1859 and on Nov. 28 of that year she was married to James Root, who preceded her to the grave 28 years ago.
Ten children were born to this union, of whom seven survive. They are: Charles E., Joseph S., Mrs. Frank Winegar, James A., and Miss Dora, all of this county; Miss Hattie of Anoka and Mrs. Margaret Nelson of Saco, Montana. William R. died three years ago and Marvin and Fred died in infancy. She is also mourned by 22 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held at 1:30 last Sunday afternoon, Rev. Campbell of New Richland officiating. Appropriate hymns were sung by H.E. Johnson and Mrs. Milo Hodgkins. Interment was made in Wilton cemetery, beside the remains of her husband. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, giving mute testimony to the love and esteem in which deceased was held.
Mrs. Root was a woman of strong Christian character and a kind and loving wife and mother. May she rest in peace.
