A pioneer Grand Junction resident and western story writer, Austin Corcoran, 86, died Sunday in Canon City, his residence for the past 12 years. He had been ill for several months.
Corcoran was born Sept. 26, 1878 in Jamestown, Pa., and came to Grand Junction in 1883 where he ranched and wrote western stories for most of his adult life. He wrote several novels and had published short stories in the Saturday Evening Post.
He was married to Avis Turner in Pueblo on Dec. 14, 1905. Mrs. Corcoran died in Grand Junction in 1957.
After leaving Grand Junction, Corcoran lived for a time in Taos, M.M., and then moved to Canon City.
He was a charter member of the Colorado Author's League, and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Junction.
He is survived by two sons, Robert, Grand Junction, and Albert, Columbia, Mo.; a daughter, Miss Mary Corcoran, Grand Junction; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Fabing and Miss Madge Corcoran, both of Oakland, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
Rosary will be at St. Joseph's at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and funeral services at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's. The Rev. Aloysius Bertrand will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in charge.
