Born on December 21, 1887, in Oakley, Iowa, she was the daughter of Josiah and Cynthia Ellen (Malone) Burgett.
She came to Wallowa as the bride of Thomas Grover Johnson in March of 1907 after their marriage February 3, 1907, at the home of her parents in Oakley. The trip was made by train to Elgin and from there by horse and buggy to her first home in Lower Valley north of Wallowa.
Mrs. Johnson spent her entire life as a homemaker for her family, living in Wallowa County except for a five year period from 1942 to 1947. Mr. Johnson worked during those years for Union Pacific Railroad as guard during World War II at Reith.
Mrs. Johnson's interests were birds, flowers and gardening and letter-writing, and she served as a Wallowa correspondent to the Wallowa County Chieftain for nearly 38 years. She also did textile painting and quilting. She was known for her kind deeds and help to anyone who needed assistance.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Wallowa Christian Church, where she was active until entering the nursing home.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 5, 1980, at the Wallowa Christian Church at 2 p.m. with Bruce Hill officating. Lynn and Bruce Hill sang "My Father's World" and "Beyond The Sunset" accompanied by organist Geneva Johnson.
Pallbearers were Mrs. Johnson's grandsons: Norman Alander, David and John George, Tipton and Ted Holloway, Bruce, Bob and Tom Johnson, Melville and Michael Moores.
Vault interment was in the Wallowa Cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by five daughters and two sons: Mrs. Frank (Ellen) Alander of Prineville, Mrs. John (Dorothy) George and Elmer City, Washington, Mrs. Merritt (Winona) Holloway of Live Oak, California, Mrs. Walter (Maybeth) Wilson of Marion, Louisiana, Mrs. Roy (Grace) Moores of Wallowa, Thomas K. Johnson of Sunnyside, Washington, and Joe B. Johnson of Pullman, Washington; a sister Mrs. Vern (Myrtle) Roebuck of Davenport, Iowa; two brothrs, Ross Burgett of Indianola, Iowa, and Truman Burgett of Concord, California; 33 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant son in 1908, a daughter, Mrs. Spencer (Mildred) Trump in 1971 and her husband Thomas Grover Johnson, May 27, 1973.
