Kernersville Merchant and Veteran
James A. Lowery, 87, Confederate veteran and one of the best-known residents of Kernersville, died yesterday afternoon at 6 o'clock at his home on Main street. He was stricken with a heart attack at 8 o'clock yesterday morning and his condition was critical until the end.
Born at Belews Creek in Forsyth county, Mr. Lowery went to Kernersville as a young man to make his home. He spent the majority of his life there and for years had conducted a grocery store in the heart of the business section of the town. As a young man he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served during the Civil War. He was a member of the Kernersville Methodist Church.
Surviving are one son, John W. Lowery of this city: three daughters, Misses Annie and Lizzie Lowery of Kernersville; six grandchildren; one brother, John Lowery of Old Fort, and one sister, Miss Alley Lowery of Kernersville.
The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Kernersville Methodist Church. The pastor of the church will conduct the services.
