John Louis Gaskill, 95, of Fairfield, died at home Friday morning, May 6, 2011. He was born February 5, 1916 on the family homestead at the east end of Camas Prairie. He was the oldest son of Perry and Florence Peck Gaskill. John attended the Elk Creek Grade School and graduated from Camas County High School in 1934. His father died when John was a boy – leaving him the man of the family. As a result, when WWII came along, even though John was ready to serve, he stayed home to help his mother with the family farm. John also spent time cutting Christmas trees in Oregon and well drilling in Michigan.
While visiting his younger sister in western New York, John met Beverly VanStone whom he married in March 1955. They had one daughter, Roxane. John was a farmer working his own farm on the east end of the prairie and also doing custom work throughout the county.
John was a lifetime member of the Grange and Odd Fellows; He also served on the Camas Prairie Grain Growers, and Senior Center Boards.
After retirement, John spent time having coffee with friends and shooting a mean game of pool at the Senior Center, where he was a regular until just recently.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beverly, his daughter and son-in-law, Roxane & Mel Olson, his brothers Charlie Gaskill of Fairfield, and Robert Gaskill of Shoshone and his sister Almira (Dolly) Fessenden of Boise and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his two older sisters (Mae Ballard & Nellie Hollenback) and his younger brother (Lyle).
Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
