WEST POINT - Mrs. Marion Davis Turner, 83, of West Point passed away on Friday afternoon, June 27, 2008 at West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange.
Funeral services are planned for Tuesday, July 1 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of West Point with Dr. Hugh C. Peacock and Dr. Thomas J. Tucker officiating. Graveside services will follow at Marseilles Cemetery.
Mrs. Turner was preceded in death by her husband, Luther S. Turner, former postmaster of West Point. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Turner Hudson of Atlanta, GA; her son, Luther S. Turner of Winston Salem, NC; and her sister, Betty Davis Shirley of Rock Hill, SC.
She was born Sept. 27, 1924 in Buffalo, Chambers County, to Bessie Lee Farr Davis and Alfred Tennyson Davis. She was a graduate of Five Points High School. After moving to West Point, Mrs. Turner worked in the offices of Lanett Mill and later in the corporate offices of Wehadkee Yarn Mills. Her most rewarding position was as an information specialist for the Georgia Department of Industry and Trade at the Georgia Welcome Center. She thoroughly enjoyed working with the traveling public.
Mrs. Turner was an active member of the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs for more than 60 years and served as district president. She remained an energetic member until her death. She held the office of vice president on the Troup Council on Aging and was an active member in the West Point Senior Center. For more than 15 years, she served on the Troup County Board of Elections, where she worked as the West Point poll manager. She was an active member of the Chattahoochee Valley Historical Society and a long standing member of the First Baptist Church of West Point.
The family will receive friends Monday, June 30 from 6 until 8 p.m. at McCarthy Funeral Home in West Point. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange or the American Cancer Society.
