James died, possibly of a communicable disease, on July 26, 1889 just three months after his 10th birthday and two weeks before his two month old sibling (gender unknown). He is buried in the White Rock Cemetery near the town of Ross in McLennan County Texas next to his infant sibling, his father and mother.
