James Marion Shockler was born near Talledega Alabama January 15, 1847 to Joseph Lawrence Shockler and Eliza Katherine Henderson Shockler. In 1850 he moved with his family to Texas, going by ship, riverboat and wagon. The family settled in Cherokee County near Alto TX. Nothing else is known of James' early childhood.
James' step-brother, George Thomas and half-brother Thomas H. Shockler, both joined the Confederate Army when the Civil War started. Neither of these boys survived the War.

In January of 1863, two months short of his 16th birthday, James ran away from home and joined the CSA. He was assigned to J.P. Border's/Anderson's Cavalry Regiment(Cadet Corps)Company A. At Camp Ford in Tyler TX the Regiment was assigned to guard Union Prisoners. Part of that duty was taking prisoners to Shreveport in guarded wagons for their exchange. Later in the war Border's Cavalry was transferred to the Texas Coast for duty there. The unit disbanded at War's end never having engaged the enemy.

James returned home to Cherokee County after the war where he married Louisiana Francis Fountain in 1877. They had three sons by 1883-James M., William and Andrew Jackson. The family moved to McLennan County in the mid-1880's. The Shocklers suffered the death of two children in 1889, young James and S. F. (gender unknown). In 1907 James Marrion applied for and received his Texas Confederate Pension # 12425.

James and Louisiana moved to Penelope Texas and remained there until his death in 1925. Louisiana joined him Sept. 13, 1929. Both are buried next to their two young children at the White Rock Cemetery in McLennan County.
