Edward Allen Harrison, 89, of Aberdeen, passed away Monday, April 4, 2011, at Bingham County Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center in Blackfoot.
He was born December 1, 1921, in Lawton, Oklahoma, to Charles Audley and Edna Lou Howeth Harrison. Ed was on his own at the age of 9 years old. He owned a trucking business prior to being drafted in 1942.
Edward served in the United States Army during World War II in the Infantry in the European Theater. He later transferred to the Army Air Corps and served as a gunner on the B-24 in the Southern European and Northern Africa Theaters. He received several commendation for his meritorious service, such as the European, African, and Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Bomb Group 43 Distinguished Unit Badge with one Oak Leaf Cluster. After serving from 1942-1945, he was honorably discharged at the rank of sergeant.
Edward was raised in Oklahoma and spent most of his adult life in Yuma, Ariz. He spent the summers in Idaho and winters in Arizona from 1985 until his death.
He was a life member of the VFW in Yuma, Arizona, and in 1983, he met Hazel Westfall at a Senior Citizen's Dance. On April 31, 1983, they were married.
He was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served as a faithful home teacher.
He worked as a farm hand on many ranches, one of which was John Wayne's Red River Ranch near Phoenix. He later was employed by the Yuma, Arizona School District as a ground maintenance supervisor. He retired in 1987. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, fishing, playing baseball, sightseeing and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel, of Aberdeen; stepsons, Ray (Winona) Westfall of Moore, Idaho, and Dwayne (Lona) Westfall of Ft. Collins, Colorado; sister, Louella Rogers of Walters, Oklahoma, who loved him very much; and seven step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2011, at the Aberdeen LDS Chapel. A closed casket visitation will be held from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment will be in the Aberdeen Cemetery under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home.
