Born in Russell County, Va., he was the son of the late John Fred Dye and Bertha Keen Dye. He was a member of the Richlands Tabernacle Church, where he served as an usher for 35 years. He was a retired coal miner with Pittston Coal Co. and a member of the UMWA local 1259.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Johnny Dye, Perry Dye, Arnold (Tom) Dye and Bobby Dye; and two sisters, Hester Hughes and Pinky Dye.
Mr. Dye is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mrs. Geraldine Dye; six sisters, Hazel Campbell of Richlands, Jackie Johnson of Swords Creek, Va., Maxie Hale of Richlands, Sylvia Hess of Rowe, Va., Becky Hale of Rowe and Darlene Dye of Hansonville, Va.; one brother, Billy Dye of Swords Creek, Va.; and many special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Joe Elmer Dye will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at the Richlands Tabernacle Church in Richlands, with the Revs. Ralph Horton, Bob Osborne, David Horton and Phillip Horton officiating. Entombment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Va.
Men of the Richlands Tabernacle Church Bible Class will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
