Mary Madalyn Sjue, 85, Portal, N.D., died Saturday, March 12, 2011, in a Sun City, Ariz., hospital.

Mary was born Oct. 26, 1925, in Bowbells, N.D., the daughter of Peder Duhn and Dorothea (Knudsen) Pedersen. She was raised on the family farm west of Bowbells and graduated from Bowbells High School in 1942.

On Nov. 25, 1947, Mary was united in marriage to Albert Sjue. They made their home in Portal, where she worked at the Sjue family store from 1947 to 1955. They operated a restaurant in Portal from 1955 to 1965 and the Gateway Bar from 1965 until 1975. In 1963 she began her career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture ASCS office in Bowbells. In 1988 she retired from the ASCS office and went to work at H.A. Woods Brokerage in Portal, where she worked until retiring in 2000.

Mary enjoyed working and keeping busy throughout her life, especially with gardening, friends and cards. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and spending her winters in Arizona. She was a member of the Portal Presbyterian Church, Order of Eastern Star, and the North Dakota Historical Society. Mary refurbished the Portal State Bank and made it into a museum that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Mary is survived by: her sons, Christopher (Pat) of Fargo, N.D., Gordon, of Portal, and Ronald (Heather) of Mandeville, La.; grandchildren, Allan, of Mandeville, La., Bradley (Janelle) of Kansas City, Mo., Scott, of Phoenix, Ariz. and Eric Sjue, of Amsterdam, Holland; great-grandchildren, Nora, Finn, Duhn and Ivan Sjue; sister, Dorothy Johnson, of Sun City, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert; and brothers, Leonard, Raymond, Robert and Gordon Pedersen.

Funeral: Saturday, March 19, 2011, at 11 a.m., in the Portal Presbyterian Church, Portal.

Interment: Portal Memorial Cemetery.
