Fred was the 3rd child of 13 born to Henry Bartels and Mary Haake. He spent his entire life in the area south of Tobias, Nebraska. My father-in-law, Raymond Bartels, spent a year living with his family following his graduation from high school and there not only had a great time with "Uncle Fritz" and his cousins, but learned how to farm.

His obituary, published 20 Feb 1964 at Geneva, Nebraska in "The Nebraska Signal", page 5:
Fred G. Bartels Fatally Injured In Ladder Fall
F. G. Bartels of Tobias, Neb., died Saturday, February 8, 1964, in the Fillmore County hospital at Geneva, Neb., of injuries suffered in a fall from a ladder.
Fred Bartels, son of Henry Bartels and Mary Haake, was born near Daykin, Neb., April 26, 1892. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran church of Tobias, where he was a life-long active member.
In 1893 the family moved to Tobias. Mr. Bartels was married to Martha Roesler November 8, 1917. They spent their married life on a farm two miles south and one-half east of Tobias.
Mr. Bartels died at the age of 71. His survivors include his wife, Martha, five children, Mrs. Harold (Wilma) Jordening of Tobias; Lucinda Bartels of Seward, Mrs. Kenneth (Marie) Francis of Tobias, Mrs. Arthur (Lois) Schoenbeck of Western and Frederick Bartels of Tobias; 14 grandchildren, seven brothers, Ernst of Tobias, John of Topeka, Kas., Henry, Paul, Emil, Theodore and Edwin, all of Tobias; two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Hulda) Obermiller [sic-Obermueller] of Lincoln, Kas., and Hattie Bartels of Tobias and one uncle, John Bartels of Tobias. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Herman, and infant twin brothers.
Services were held Tuesday, February 11, at 2 p. m. at Zion Lutheran church with Rev. E. H. Prange officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
