On January 8, 1887, John married Cordelia Hawkins. They lived near Clay Lick, Kentucky where they joined the Methodist Church. John and Cordelia had three sons; William Ira, Benjamin Earl, and John Crittenden, and two daughters; Anne Irene and Evyline Loraine. Cordelia died at the age of thirty-one from typhoid fever.
After the death of Cordelia, John married Mabel Wright, whom he later divorced. They had one son, Arthur. In 1905 John moved with his family to Tulsa, Oklahoma and later he went to Los Angeles, California.
