Mrs. Mary Ann Burkepile, wife of Jacob Burkepile, living in the eastern part of town (Beloit), died last night of heart disease. She had been sick about a month, although she had the dread disease for years.

Mary Ann Risedorff [sic] was born May 28, 1838 in Saville Twp., Pennsylvania. At the age of 21 she united with the Lutheran Church, and was a faithful follower of the Master to the end.

Her marriage to Mr. Burkepile took place in 1866. Eight children were born to them and seven of them are living. Five attended the funeral services and one lives in Illinois and another in Oregon. The funeral was held from the Lutheran Church last Thursday morning in which church she was a beloved and faithful member. It is indeed sad to see a man follow his partner of over 30 years standing at the grave, especially when the deceased was as true, kind, and faithful as was Mrs. Burkepile, and it would be unbearable, except for the assurance that a happy reunion shall take place beyond the grave. It can be said of her, "She hath done what she could."
-----------------------------------------
The preceding is taken from her obituary published in theBeloit, Kansas newspaper "The Beloit Gazette" and contains an error. There were only seven children born to Mary Ann and Jacob, and six were living at the time of her death. The surviving children were Hannah Jane (Mrs. James Edward Hunter), John William, Charles Edward, Sarah Catherine known as Kate (Mrs. Gustave Casper), Henry Sylvester, and Susan Ellen known as Ella (Mrs. Eugene Clayton Mears). A son, James Calvin, was born 15 Aug. 1877 and died 13 August 1879.
The obituary also would lead one to think that she had died on 11 Apr instead of 5 April.

However, Mary Ann had a child, Anna, by her first husband, William Minich. [This name is in doubt; Anna's death certificate named "Joe David Minich" as her father, and the information on Joseph Minich seems to fit.]Anna was married to a Souder at the time of Jacob's death.
----------------------------------------
Family records have her maiden name "Ricedorf"; however, this may have been changed at some point from "Reisdorff". Her name appears as "Mary Ann Reisdorff" as being confirmed on December 18,1858 at the Mannsville Lutheran church in Perry County, Pennsylvania. (Source: "Churches Between the Mountains, a History of the Lutheran Congregations in Perry County, Pennsylvania" by Rev. D. H. Focht, published 1862; chapter II, Section V.) Her parents' last name on their headstone is spelled "Ricedorff".
