Sarah Catherine Burkepile, known to her family as "Kate" was born in the hills of Perry County (Tyrone township), Pennsylvania on August 12, 1871 to Jacob and Mary Anna (nee Ricedorff) Burkepile. She was baptized in the Mannsville Lutheran Church on March 29, 1872. She had three older siblings (Hannah Jane, John William, and Charles Edward) and three younger (Henry Sylvester or Harry, Susan Ellen or Ella, and James Calvin). Her youngest brother died at the age of two and in buried in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

At the age of eight, on March 15, 1880, her family re-located to Mitchell county, Kansas, first settling in Solomon Rapids township. They lived there for two years and then her father purchased land in southern Mitchell County, near the Lincoln County line; two years later he built a wonderful two-story rock home from the native limestone in the area. Their school, near Saltville, was a 4.5 mile walk from their house. Later, the children were allowed to attend the nearer Rocky Point school in Lincoln county.

On November 27, 1890, after her parents had moved to Beloit, Kate married Gustave Adolphus Caspar of Iowa; the marriage took place in her parents' home. Soon after, they moved to Union County, Oregon and had four children:
1. Ida May (21 Mar 1894-28 Aug 1897);
2. Elsie Beulah (12 May 1895-10 May 1983), who married Charles Leon Robinson;
3. Herbert Harry (14 Sep 1897-17 Aug 1900); and
4. Eldon Gustave (10 Apr 1908-5 Mar 1973).

At some point before 1920, they quit farming and moved to Hot Lake, Oregon to work at the Hot Lake Sanitorium. Her husband died there in 1929 and Kate continued to work there as a cook for a little while, before moving to Yakima, Washington (where daughter Elsie was); Wichita, Kansas; and Ellensburg Washington (where son Eldon was). She spent several years also living with her older sister, Jennie Hunter.

At her death, she was survived by her two children (Elsie and Eldon), five grandchildren, and her sister Ella.
