Lois, the oldest daughter of John William and Nancy Thatcher Ford Prescott, decided she wanted to make her own way and not continue farming with the family. Lois wanted to go into nurses training at the Cameron Hospital, Cameron, Texas, at the age of 17. She graduated in 1919. After she married Ernest Pinkney Hess, November 8, 1919, she continued to work in the hospital all of her life, except to have her two children, Bonnelle and Delbert, until 1943.

April 10, 1943, when Lois and Ernest lived in Hood Village, Lois decided to take a bus to go to Temple to visit her daughter, Bonnelle. A short time after she boarded the bus, she was seen to stand up suddenly and fell on the floor. The bus driver and other passengers rushed to her aid. Seeing that she had evidently had a heart attack, the bus driver sped the bus to Killen which was only 2 miles from her home. All efforts to revive her were unsuccessful. She was buried in Rosebud, Texas Cemetery, April 12. She was 44 years old.
