After her mother died, Tracy was placed in a foster home in Lula, Georgia, where she lived until about age 20. She maintained life-long contacts with her foster family. In the early 1920s, she moved to Altanta, working at the Atlanta Clearing House processing bankchecks. There she met Newt Putnam whom she married about 1923. In the late 1920s, Tracy worked as a sales clerk at Sears Roebuck & Co in Atlanta. During the mid-1930s, Tracy and Newt lived in Barnwell, South Carolina, where they operated a furniture store. About 1940, they moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where Newt was a partner in Lea & Putnam Furniture Store. In the mid-1960s, after her brother-in-law, Nick Burgess, died, Tracy and Newt moved to Nashville to live with her sister, Jessie DeRossett Burgess. After both Newt and Jessie died, Tracy moved to Chattanooga to live with her half-sister, Louise DeRossett Tolleson. Tracy and Newt had no children.
