Funeral services for James D. Butler were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the North English Methodist church, conducted by Rev. C.E. McPherson.
Hymns were sung by Mrs. Bruce Warner and Mrs. C.A. Schoenthaler, accompanied by E.B. Warner.
A resident of Sioux City, but a native of North English, Mr. Butler died last Thursday night in University hospitals, Iowa City. He had been ill a short time.
Masonic rites, conducted by Noel Mantz, were held at the graveside in the North English cemetery where burial was made.
James Butler was born to James Davey and Elizabeth Barrymore Collinan Butler, February 17, 1883 and passed from this life at Iowa City Thursday evening September 2, 1954, aged 71 years, 6 months and 15 days.
Mr. Butler was united in marriage to Edith Denzler of Marengo at the bride’s home. She died many years ago.
He was united in marriage to Miss Ruth Butler at Low Hampton, New York on August 3, 1933.
This union was blessed with one son, Joseph, who is attending school at Troy, New York.
Mr. Butler followed railroading most of his life, having retired a few years ago. He also worked as a paper maker in Holyoke, Mass. He was a graduate of the North English schools and a member of the Masonic fraternity.
Mr. Butler came from a very fine Methodist home, was a wonderful husband and marvelous father. He was devoted to his parents. Mr. Butler enjoyed singing and loved nature.
Mr. Butler has two surviving sisters, Mrs. Laura Butler Amick of Sac City and Mrs. Mary Butler Hogendorn of Colfax.
His parents, four brothers, Fred, Owen, William and Frank and a sister, Helen Overhalt preceded him in death.
Besides a true and faithful wife, a son Joseph and two sisters he leaves many friends and will be missed by those who knew him best. (Williamsburg Journal Tribune, Williamsburg, IA, September 16, 1954)
