North English, Ia., Nov. 7 – Hon. J.D. Butler died at his home here Tuesday night of paralysis. He was a prominent lawyer and an old soldier. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made. (Daily times, Davenport, IA, November 7, 1912)

James D. Butler died at his home in North English Nov. 5, 1912, at the age of 65 years. He was the youngest of eight children. When a boy of 15, he became a Union soldier. In 1882, he came to Iowa and practiced law from 1882 to 1911. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and in politics a Democrat. He had his third stroke of paralysis last Saturday, which caused his death. He was twice married, his first wife dying in Vermont. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, six children and two children in Vermont.

The funeral services were held in the Methodist church Thursday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Munster, and burial was in the North English cemetery. (Quad-city Times, Davenport, IA, November 8, 1912)
