His birth date of March 1, 1853, is based upon the fact that there was no February 29 in 1853. If he were born on February 29, it would have been 1852, and his parents would not have been married yet.
According to his next to youngest child Missouri 1899-1993, he was a cook at the Fairwood Bandmill near Troutdale, VA. He made square baskets with lids for his children and grandchildren to take their lunches to school.
