He was the son of Allen Franklin Anderson and Mary Ann Ward. On March 17, 1913, he married Flora Bell Halsey. He played the banjo (which may have been made by his father) and sang. Some and perhaps all (no facts available) of his siblings played various instruments and sang. He was a farmer and carpenter.

Their children were as follows:
Harry Raymond Anderson born Feb 7, 1914, in Kentucky (according to his brother Dwight; Uncle Ray searched for his birth certificate but never found it). He died in Grayson County, VA, on August 4, 1986, and is buried in Pine Branch Cemetery.
Dwight Anderson was born 29 August 1917 in Pike, Kentucky, and died in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on 29 March 2013.
Zettie Mae Anderson was born in Grayson County, Virginia, on 14 May 1919. She died in Roanoke, Virginia, 4 May 2009.
Virginia Dare was born 14 June 1924 in Grayson County, Virginia. She died in Fancy Gap, Carroll County, VA, on May 6, 2007.
Donna Lee was born 26 March 1926 in Grayson County, Virginia. She died in Rising Sun, MD, on 25 Dec. 2008.
